Visualware Introduces System Security Software to Identify Intruders and their Geographical Locations
VisualLookoutTM Monitors Open System Ports, Identifies Suspicious Activity
TURLOCK, CALIF. - May 6, 2002 - Visualware Inc. today unveiled VisualLookout 2.1, software that monitors visitor activity on open ports of one or more computer systems and identifies suspicious behavior to help stop hacker attempts.
The new release locates the country of origin for inbound and outbound connections and shows the location on a world map. The software also provides automated alerts for notification of undesired events, such as a connection from a high-risk location. VisualLookout provides both high-level and detailed views that provide traffic information in real-time or on a historical basis. Information provided includes views of active network connections showing who is connected, the service being used, whether the connection is inbound or outbound, how many connections are active and how long a user has been connected.
"VisualLookout can best be described as the motion detector for a computer system," said Julian Palmer, Visualware's chief marketing officer. "Systems connected to the Internet have open ports that are necessary to provide Web services, send email and transfer files. VisualLookout monitors the activity on these open doors, which hackers use to find their way into a company network or an individual's computer system, and that firewalls often do not protect. The geographical source of an IP address is often a key piece of information that can help network administrators determine the level of a security risk."
A key feature of VisualLookout is AutoSentry, which monitors every movement of a selected connection element, allowing any port, domain name or IP address to be singled out for scrutiny and tracking. AutoSentry provides information about the number of connections that are current and historical for that IP address or domain, the time spent at the site and the services used. The activity history of an IP address is available to quickly determine if ports are being scanned to find an open back door or to determine whether a particular IP address is continually on the server.
VisualLookout can simultaneously monitor up to 100 systems. It is available for the Windows platform, with licenses starting at $39.95. A free, 15-day trial version of the product is available at www.visualware.com.
